Cyprus settlement will include equality for Turkish Cypriots: Nami

Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ozdil Nami has assured that no solution will be offered for a referendum which does not include the equality and security of the Turkish Cypriots.

Speaking on behalf of President Mustafa Akinci at the 11th ordinary general assembly of the Cyprus Turkish Businessmen’s Association (ISAD), Nami said that the whole process of the negotiations today is based, firstly on the framework created by former Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktaş, the convergence paper drawn up by former Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat, and most importantly, the joint declaration of February 11, with former Turkish Cypriot President Derviş Eroglu.

Nami further said that Akinci has given his guarantee that he will not create a solution document, which does not include political equality and does not safeguard the full security of all Turkish Cypriots.

Stressing that during the whole process they have kept in close consultation with Turkey. With Turkey’s support and technical assistance, Nami argued that the model which is created, will be able to solve the property issue in a more advanced, clear, transparent and speedier way, than the Annan plan, and will not put the Turkish Cypriots into financial trouble.

Noting that the Governance and Power-sharing issue is one of the most important chapters of the Cyprus negotiations, Nami explained that the issues, which were left outstanding and some others which were precluded in order to safeguard progress in this chapter, are not so serious that they will prevent the solution of the Cyprus problem.
