Granting the Greek Cypriots membership of the EU was an unfair act towards the Turkish Cypriots., Deputy PM nd Foreign Minister Kudret Özersay has said.
For the last 15 years Turkish Cypriots have paid the price for the mistake made by the EU. It has also led to the delay in solving the Cyprus problem, he said. The Greek Cypriots feel secure enough to delay or prevent the reunification of Cyprus.
In his statement, Özersay stressed that this situation will not change the fact that the Turkish Cypriots are European, even though the Turkish Cypriot people are the main victims of the mistake made by the EU.
Özersay, continued as follows:
“The Turkish Cypriot people and the state have been deprived of EU membership, but it does not mean that we will abandon the struggle we have made on the basis of modern values because of this error made by the EU and for which we have been paying for 15 years. The Turkish Cypriot people are determined to move towards the values of contemporary civilizations for a secular and democratic state structure. We are not going to give up our efforts to become a modern society because of the misconduct we have endured in the national interests of some EU member states.
Although we are not a member of the EU, no one can deny that we are European by our values. If there are Member States that give importance to the credibility and reliability of the European Union, they must take steps to put an end to this injustice suffered by the Turkish Cypriot people.”
