Work on the Derynia border crossing on the Greek Cypriot side is almost complete, the head of the checkpoint technical committee Sotos Zackheos said on Friday.
During a visit to the checkpoint with chief negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis, representatives of the Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry and public works technicians, Zackheos said they were inspecting the ongoing work “so that we are sure that the checkpoint from the technical side will be ready to operate according to the timeline set by the president”.
During the informal dinner held by the two Cypriot community leaders Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci on April 16, Anastasiades had said the Derinya checkpoint could potentially be ready by 1 July.
The checkpoint between Lefke and Aplic is expected to open mid-September.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Zackheos said the works were almost finished on the Greek Cypriot side and all that remained to see was when the work in the buffer zone would be completed.
