Drug trafficking Greek priest is defrocked

A Greek priest currently serving a five year jail sentence for importing drugs was defrocked by the Holy Synod yesterday. He had been a priest for ten years.

Panayiotis Triantafyllou, aged 37, was jailed last year for possession of three kilos of cannabis.

He was found to be carrying the drugs when he landed in Larnaca last April. Triantafllou, acknowledging his mistake, had told police that he had been paid 1000 Euros and given a return plane ticket to carry the suitcase into the R0C from Athens because he was having finanacial problems and his wife was ill.
