Economy Minister calls for free trade across the divide

Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce Sunat Atun has argued that free circulation of goods throughout Cyprus should be undertaken with the cooperation of the Greek Cypriots, prior to a Cyprus settlement.

He called on the Greek Cypriots to permit mutual trade. Atun said that to ease the negotiations, they should mutually free up the movement of goods and services across the island. This would help revive the economy, he added. Atun also noted that the Greek Cypriot economy needs a solution as badly as the Turkish Cypriot economy.

On Thursday, Cyprus Weekly reported that three lorries travelling from the North, had been detained by South Cyprus police in cooperation with the Sovereign Bases Area Police at Dhekelia.

Members of the Department of Specials Tasks at Pyla, acting on a tipoff, searched the trucks and found 60 tonnes of potatoes on boards.

The trucks were confiscated by the SBA police and the drivers held for questioning by Customs officials.

Atun was speaking at a meeting with members of the Board of Directors of the All Bureaucrats and Businesspeople Social Solidarity Association (TUMBIAD), who are currently in North Cyprus for a series of contacts.

The President of TUMBIAD said that the aim of their visit is to evaluate and look into investment opportunities in the TRNC.
