“We are increasing traffic penalties, but issuing fines should be the last resort in education“, CTP MP Filiz Besim stated in parliament, Yeniduzen reports.
She emphasised that penalties are not a deterrent and stressed the importance of educating the public about traffic. Besim remarked, “Preventing traffic accidents is a matter of education and culture”, and highlighted that this should become ingrained in our culture.
Addressing Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı, Besim said, “You closed the traffic education park and claimed there were no funds”. She added, “The only action you took during your three-year tenure as minister was to implement this law”.
Referring to the fatal traffic accident on the North Nicosia ring road, Besim pointed out, “The roads are dark at night”. She mentioned that Arıklı admitted, “I couldn’t find the necessary funds. Turkey built this road, but I was incompetent and couldn’t illuminate it”. This is unacceptable, Besim said.
