UN Special Envoy to Cyprus Espen Barth Eide returned to Cyprus on Tuesday evening and met with President Nicos Anastasiades early this morning. He was scheduled to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci at 10am.
Talks are ongoing to reunited the island under a federal roof.
The two community leaders met last Wednesday, and both presented their proposals to progress the negotiations.
On Monday evening, Anastasiades told the media that he proposed holding a Cyprus Conference in Geneva immediately, to complete and finalise discussions on the Security and Guarantees chapter, then to carry straight on to the discussion and resolution of the property issue, if and when there is a conclusion.
He also proposed remaining in Geneva for as long as was needed and holding a continuous leaders’ summit, in order to achieve not just substantial progress, but even the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem as well.
Turkish Cypriot community leader Mustafa Akinci has dismissed Anastasiades’ proposal as an attempt to lay down preconditions prior to a Geneva Conference.
