This week will be decisive for the future of the Cyprus negotiations. Greek Cypriot daily ‘Politis’ reports that a UN proposal will be presented to Cypriot community leaders, Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci.
UN Special Envoy to Cyprut Espen Barth Eide will send its draft formula to the leaders today and tomorrow and will also meet the leaders separately with the drafts.
According to the newspaper, Eide accepts the main thrust of the formula as presented by Anastasiades, noting that Anastasiades focused on three points in his proposal to President Akıncı in the talks on May 17, and said what he had anticipated that he would give detailed information on his proposal to the National Council meeting as follows:
“Security and Guarantees to headline discussions and agreement.
Negotiations on territory, and then negotiating the other four headings (Property, Administration, Economy, EU issues) with the goal of reaching the final agreement.”
Anastasiades described the his proposal as “a structured and concrete proposal to find a solution to the Cyprus problem before the presidential elections, if accepted by the Turkish Cypriot leader”.
