Eight rescued from sinking boat off Ayia Napa

Eight people were rescued from a sinking vessel off the coast of Ayia Napa on Sunday.

The police said that they had received a distress call at 1.45pm from an unidentified vessel which was in an area near the harbour.

The vessel which had eight persons aboard, four adults and four children, was taking on water and sinking,” an announcement said. They did not say how near it was to the coast.

A police launch went out to the boat and took the children and two adults on board. Meanwhile, two adults stayed on board the boat while it was towed back to harbour by a private yacht.

The police said that all the passengers had reached the shore in safety.
