Embargoes violate human rights

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu said that a great duty falls upon the international community to remove the isolations and the restrictions against the Turkish Cypriot people that do nothing more than further deepen the mistrust and relations between the two peoples on the island.

“Considering efforts to establish a federal partnership have failed we must look into ways to become good neighbours, respect one another and live in peace side to side” said Mr. Ertuğruloğlu.

Issuing a written statement on the failed Cyprus conference, the Foreign Minister said that efforts to establish a Federation within the UN Secretary General’s good offices mission parameters have also failed.

He said that during this phase the Turkish Cypriot side and motherland Turkey have shown a constructive and good willed manner and added that the sole reason why the talks failed in Crans-Montana were due to the Greek Cypriot side refusing to give equal rights to the Turkish Cypriot people.

“They were playing for time as they want the talks to come to a standstill so that they can further deepen their roots within the international arena and to severe the TRNC ties from motherland Turkey” said Ertuğruloğlu.

“It is not the time to hurl blame at one another, we must use this opportunity to discuss the Cyprus issue on a more realistic basis by understanding that there are two peoples on the island and states who could harvest good neighbourly relations, we must use this opportunity” said the Foreign Minister.

Noting that within the past 50 years of discussing the Cyprus talks it has become quite clear that there are two very different positions at the talks, Mr. Ertuğruloğlu said that for the past decades the Turkish Cypriot people have been suffering under inhuman isolations and restrictions due to campaigns carried out by Greek Cypriots.

“This is against all laws and human rights. It serves nothing more than to deepen the ridges between the two peoples on the island and worsen relations” said Ertuğruloğlu and added that a great duty falls upon the international arena to and the European Union to rectify this situation without wasting any more time.
