Minister of the Interior Ayşegül Baybars has refuted the accusations that the decree for the development of Famagusta, Yeni Iskele and Yeni Bogazici would damage the natural environment. The decree protects streams, wetlands and cultural heritage, she countered.
Baybars noted that under certain conditions, “citizens are not deprived of their right to build a home and infrastructure investments”, she added.
Local civic leaders have said that the decree watered down building permit limitations, while the business community lead by the building contractors’ union, say that the temporary decree means more land will be used up to supply the demand for homes. Building upwards was preferable, the head of the building contractors’ union, Cafer Gurcafer has argued.
