Estate Agent Jailed for Fraud

An estate agent has been sentenced to four years imprisonment for fraud.

Taskiran with Yontem

Yasemin Taskiran was found guilty of taking a deposit of 350,960 Tl earlier this year, from a well-known Turkish actor Selcuk Yontem for an appartment in Kyrenia. When the sale fell through, his money was not returned.

Ms. Taskiran admitted taking the deposit money because she was in debt. She was sentenced to four years jail by Kyrenia District Court.

The Cyprus Turkish Realtors’ Association (KTEB) expressed its sadness that the actor had been defrauded. Chairman of KTEB Hasan Sungur, in a press release, said that there had been a recent spate of investors either from Turkey or third countries, wishing to buy property in the North, who had become victims of fraud. Sungur blamed the government for its lack of oversight in this sector.
