EU Commission to Monitor Safety of Akkuyu Power Plant

The European Commission is aware that Turkey plans to build a nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, and will act to ensure “the safety of European citizens”, Commission’s spokeswoman Anna Kaisa Itkkonen said on Monday, in answer to a question by CNA, during the daily briefing.

The Commission is already in contact with the Turkish authorities on the issue, she added, noting that it will ask for assurances that the construction of the nuclear power plant will conform with existing European legislation and the Euratom Treaty.

Following on, Commission spokeswoman Maya Kotsigianic said that “Turkey still has candidate status” and that the Commission “is currently completing the relevant progress report” associated with Turkey’s candidacy, promising to have a detailed paragraph on the issue.
