The European parliament has voted to scrap the practice of daylight saving time in 2021. Member countries can decided whether they will keep to permanent Summer or Winter time in 2021.
The vote was passed by 410 to 192.
In 2016, Turkey decided to keep to summer time and is 3 hours ahead of GMT. The TRNC followed suit. However, a petition was signed by all unions to return to the practice of daylight saving time on the grounds that the number of road traffic accidents had increased because early mornings were darker. North Cyprus reverted to daylight saving time in 2018.
What it will do when the new European law comes into effect in 2021 remains to be seen.
