Former Greek Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides, died yesterday.
Clerides was the Greek Cypriot President over two consecutive terms from 1993 – 2003. A prominent leader who formulated treaties which gave the island independence, he was also a negotiator with the late Turkish Cypriot President, Rauf Denktas, who died last year.
Clerides retired from politics in 2003, failing to become re-elected for a shortened third term, which was intended to focus on peace negotiations with the Turkish Cypriots.
April 2004 saw his last public appearance at a Cyprus re-unification rally.
Glafcos Clerides was 94.
