Fake marriage exposed

Muhammad Abit came over from Pakistan in 2008 and has been working in the TRNC under a work permit.

In 2011 he went to the TRNC Social Security office and announced that he was married and asked for the TL 2,500 ‘marriage gift’ that is paid out by the State. He produced his marriage certificate showing he had been married in Pakistan and received the payment.

However this story does not have a happy ending.

Mr Abit appeared at Nicosia court yesterday, charged with fraud. He had produced a fake marriage certificate from Pakistan in order to obtain the money.

A keen eyed government official realised that Mr Abit had entered the TRNC in 2008 and had only once left the country, in 2012. This did not reconcile with his story of getting married in Pakistan in 2011.

Mr Abit was found out, even though it was two years after the payment. He has been remanded in custody awaiting a court date.
