Famagusta couple acquitted of charges

Turkish Cypriot couple Koray Basogrultmacı and Cinel Senem Husseyin have been acquitted of their charges of raising the RoC flag in the TRNC.

“Victory. We have won, details will be given later,” Cinel Senem Husseyin, said on her Facebook page on Wednesday.

The couple were arrested for flying thee flags of the RoC outside their home and shop in Famagusta in June 2013.

They were charged with disturbing the peace, non-recognition of the TRNC and conspiracy to undermine and insult the TRNC. The last charge had only been added on this month. They had been told that they could face five years imprisonment if found guilty.

The couple have had to endure numerous postponements of their case over the past two years. Koray Basogrultmacı had said they would go to the EU Court of Human rights if they were not acquitted.
