It has been 16 years since the first border crossing point between North and South Cyprus opened up.
On 23 April, 2003 the first crossing opened at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the capital Nicosia.
Initially, crossings were only opened for pedestrians in April but on May 10, 2003, the second crossing point at Metehan was opened for vehicles.
The capital’s second pedestrian crossing point, the Lokmacı crossing point located at the heart of the city was opened on April 3, 2008.
The Akyar crossing point in Gazimağusa was opened on April 26, 2003, the Bostancı crossing point on August 31, 2005, and the Yeşilırmak crossing point on October 14, 2010.
Two more crossing points were opened up last year on November 11, 2018, bringing the total number of crossing points to nine.
