Five Villages in Paphos Evacuated as Fire Rages

A forest fire that erupted today in the village of Psathi in Paphos has rapidly intensified, prompting the evacuation of five villages as a precaution, Yeniduzen reported on Tuesday. According to Cyprus Mail, Paphos police deputy operations chief Michalis Nikolaou stated that the fire, which started at the entrance of Psathi, was advancing dangerously towards Ayios Dimitrianos.

Later on Tuesday evening,  Yeniduzen reported that the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Despite extensive efforts on the ground and from the air, the fire remains uncontrolled. Assistance has been requested from Jordan, Israel, Greece, and the European mechanism “rescEU” to aid in extinguishing the blaze. Additionally, Greece will send two Canadair planes to Cyprus to support the firefighting efforts.
