FM Ertugruloglu Addresses British Residents

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu held a meeting at the Acapulco Hotel in Kyrenia with British residents of the TRNC.

He said that: “The [Cyprus] negotiations have proved unsuccessful for 50 years and are taking more time than necessary for the Turkish Cypriot to create a country where people will be happy.”

Ertugruloglu noted that the Turkish Cypriot people will continue to take possession of their land, aided by Turkey, as is their right and entitlement to equality.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over one hundred British residents attended the meeting.

The foreign minister said that the TRNC state is the safeguarded in peace, prosperity and investment for everyone living on this land.

Ertugruloglu also criticised the UK High Commissioner to Cyprus for his negative comments regarding the status quo on the island. Turkey as a guarantor, understood the realities of the island, he said.

The foreign minister said that given the history between the Turkish and Greek Cypriots, it was unacceptable that a UK official would come here and make comments that are not appropriate for diplomatic relations with the Turkish Cypriot community.

Ertugruloglu asked the British High Commissioner to explain how it was that he recognised the Greek Cypriot Administration, which was founded by the Greek Cypriots which transformed into the Greek Cypriot Republic alone, and then go on to say that the recognition of the TRNC would be dangerous.

Ertugruloglu stated that the 50 years of negotiations are now over and that there is a new process which can now be effected on the basis of equality in the state.

He noted that the Turkish Cypriot people did not want to carry out a negotiating process which is no longer successful and noted that they would be reshaped according to the government model after the elections in North Cyprus.

Ertugruloglu then went on to answer questions put to him by the British audience.

In addition, officials from the ministries of the Interior, Labour and Social Security and Health responded to inquiries about the problems of the British living in the TRNC regarding issues such as residence, customs, property and transport.

The foreign minister was accompanied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Undersecretary Mustafa Lakadamyalı, General Manager Kemal Köprülü and the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Ministry of Economy and Energy.
