Reactions are pouring in regarding a Netflix series about the Cyprus Peace Operation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also voiced its concerns, BRTK reported.

In a recent statement, the Ministry strongly condemned both the series’ creators and the digital platform hosting it. The Ministry urged that the series, which it claims is built on false, misleading, and biased information, should not be aired.

The statement from the Ministry focused on the upcoming series about the 1974 Peace Operation. According to the Ministry, the trailer for the series includes shocking scenes that portray the events in Cyprus in a highly unrealistic manner. The Ministry argues that, as part of the usual propaganda from the Greek Cypriot side, the series wrongly depicts the honourable Turkish military as a threat to civilian lives, suggesting that the Cyprus conflict began with a “war” in 1974.

The Ministry reiterated its strong condemnation of the series and the platform airing it, calling for the show’s cancellation.

The Ministry stressed that Turkey had to intervene in Cyprus to stop ongoing violence, acting within its legitimate rights under the 1960 International Treaties. The statement also highlighted the suffering of Turkish Cypriots for 11 years leading up to 1974, the deployment of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in 1964, and the massacres that forced Turkish Cypriots into enclaves covering just three percent of the island. These, the Ministry said, are historical facts that cannot be ignored.

The statement further noted that Turkey’s intervention ended the bloodshed on the island and stated, “Today, the only force ensuring and maintaining peace in Cyprus is Turkey and the presence of the Turkish Armed Forces“.

The Ministry concluded by saying that attempts to distort the truth only reinforce the righteousness of Turkey’s efforts and strengthen its resolve to defend its position on every platform. It described July 20, 1974, as the day of liberation for Turkish Cypriots, symbolising the protection of their sovereign rights and equal status on the island. “No attempt can overshadow this reality,” the Ministry stated, adding, “We remember our martyrs with respect and our veterans with gratitude“.
