There is a major forest fire out of control above Alsancak.
The Kyrenia Fire department has told our newspaper that it started around 1pm and that they have not yet managed to control it. The Civil Defence forces have joined in to help but the winds in the area are making it very difficult. Houses in the area have been evacuated as a precaution.
A fire-fighting helicopter has flown in from Turkey and is using seawater to try and douse the flames.
Military units are also being brought in to help.
Update 16:31 – The fire appears to be largely under control although the area remains closed to the public.
