Forest fires damage slow to heal

In the last 38 years, over 70, 000 acres of forest have been destroyed by fire. These figures are provided by the Forestry Department who also say that in the same period there were 749 fires, mainly caused by negligence.

The Forestry Department has been mitigating the effect of these fires with tree plantings and, since 1975, has planted saplings covering more than 6,000 acres, still a long way short of the area destroyed by previous disasters.
