The French air force will be using Andreas Papandreou airbase in Paphos to make support operation sorties against ISIL, the South Cyprus government confirmed yesterday, ‘Cyprus Mail’ reports.
“Due to its geography, Cyprus is well placed to assist in the fight against international terrorism. But our role will be limited to the provision of facilities [at the Paphos airbase],” said Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides. He emphasised that the base will only be used for support operations, not bombing expeditions.
The ministers said that this would not be the first time that Cyprus has provided the airbase’s facilities to the French military.
The French operation will be the first to be launched from the Greek Cypriot air base against ISIL, he added.
