Famagusta council has today begun giving free access to all beaches within its boundaries.
The council says that it must uphold the principle that the beaches of the TRNC belong to its citizens.
In addition the council has sent in clean up teams to the two most popular beaches in the area, that is Palm Beach and Glapsides Beach.
It is however charging nominal amounts for the use of facilities such as sunbeds and umbrellas. Those members of the public who do not use these services are allowed free entry to the beach and sea.
Unfortunately, Kyrenia council has not followed this example.
