Fruit Growers Hopeful for New Year Produce

Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot citrus fruit producers, Ali Alioglu has said that fruit farmers are entering into the new year with hope and are expecting their harvest to reach 90 thousand tons in 2017-18.

Alioglu noted that if the water from Turkey reaches Guzelyurt early, the harvest might be doubled or tripled climbing to 250-300 thousand tones. He argued that this might bring back the good old days to the local economy.

According to Alioglu, citrus fruit orchards cover an area of 33 thousand donums [a land measure of about 1000 square meters] and need 30 million cubic meters of water annually.
