Funeral Held For Four Who Drowned off Karpaz

Four members of a Turkish family have drowned in the sea at the Tulumba area located between Kaplıcalar and Yedikonuk in Karpaz.

According to a statement by the Police, Ramazan Katirci (48), Filiz Katirci (40) and Merve Katirci (18) drowned while they were swimming in the sea at around 6:30 pm on Friday.

Search and rescue efforts were launched for Mert Katirci (13) who was swept away by the waves, however, his body was spotted and picked up by a helicopter.

Meanwhile, Barış Katırcı (12) from the same family was rescued by a fisherman, Osman Göktaş.

Göktaş who barely escaped drowning while helping young Barış, was first sent to the Famagusta State Hospital and then transferred to the Nicosia. Burhan Nalbantoglu State Hospital.

Meanwhile, state and government officials have sent their messages of condolences.

A funeral for the family was held on Sunday at Büyükkonuk Cemetery. The only surviving member of the family 12 year-old Barış Katırcı attended the funeral along with people from the local villages. President Mustafa Akinci, Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, many political figures including the Turkish Ambassador, and Peace and Security Forces also paid their respects at the funeral.
