Funeral to be held for former statesman Vebhi Serter

A state ceremony for former Turkish Cypriot statesman Vebhi Zeki Serter who died on Thursday, was held this morning at the TRNC Assembly, after which Serter will be buried at Lefkosa Cemetery, BRTK reported.

President Eroglu and Speaker of the House Sibel Siber gave messages of condolences yesterday.

“It is with great sadness that I learn of the news of our former parliamentary speaker Mr Vebhi Zeki Serter. I was fortunate to have worked with him under the same roof within the party and in parliament. He gave important services to the Turkish Cypriot people as an educator, an historian, freedom fighter, politician and parliamentary speaker. May he rest in peace. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family and to the Turkish Cypriot people”, Eroglu’s message read.

Parliamentary Speaker Sibel Siber’s message said that Vehbi Zeki Serter was a respectable and well-known figure in society.

“It is with great sorrow I learn of the passing away of Mr Serter. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family and the Turkish Cypriot people. May he rest in peace”, her message read.

Serter aged 77, suffered a heart attack at his home and was rushed to the State Hospital in Lefkosa where he passed away.

The former statesman was born in 1938 in Lefkosa. He served as a Parliamentary Speaker, Deputy Speaker and as a deputy in the TRNC Assembly.

He had also written a number of history books entitled “History of the Cyprus Turkish Struggle”, “History of Revolution in the Turkish Republic” and “Atatürk and the Cyprus Problem”.

Serter leaves behind a wife and two children.
