Gonyeli imam arrested suspected of links to FETO

Another person has been arrested on suspicion of links to the FETO organisation. FETO is described by the Turkish authorities as a terrorist organisation backed by Fethullah Gulen, a cleric who lives in exile in the US.

Following the discovery of books, which are said to contain propaganda relating to Fethullah Gulen’s FETO movement, the imam of Gonyeli mosque Ahmet Çokakli was arrested.

Cakakli claimed that the books did not belong to him, that they were read by his late mother and that he has no connections with FETO.

Reportedly, Çokakli had attempted to get rid of the books by dumping in the recycling bin.

The imam appeared at Nicosia court where the judge ordered him to be held in custody for three days, pending further investigations.
