The Trade Union Platform, which was formed to combat the social transformation policies in force in the TRNC, is trying to garner support from the political parties, it said. To this end, they met with head of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhurman to discuss developments on the agenda.
Erhurman said that the CTP would always cooperate with the trade unions:
“Secularism, democracy, human rights and commitment to the rule of law are both constitutional principles and the unifying elements of this society. Some of them have been trying to pass some politics over the last few days. At the beginning of these are the divide and rule policies that we all know very well. They are trying to make society easier to manage by dividing it into several categories. You have no part in this game. It is time for all to come to together. The promise is important, but business is more important. We must work together to establish a system and culture that is based on our goal of secularism, democracy, human rights and the rule of law”. He he added that they must work together and change the corrupted system in the TRNC.
Speaking on behalf of the Platform, Selma Eylem, chairperson of the Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers’ Trade Union (KTOEOS), said that they, with the support of every sector, should raise public awareness. She added that CTP’s contribution would be very important in this struggle.
Eylem said that establishing the Theological College, the Koran lessons, passing the religious affairs law and the opening of Turkey’s Coordination office, are efforts to engineer a community and added that the political will of the Turkish Cypriots has been weakened. She concluded by saying that they expect support from the political parties.
