Government challenged to make environmental policies

Environmental Secretary for the Confederation of Public Employees (HAKSEN) Mehmet Yakup, has asked the government to produce short, medium and long-term policies on the environment, especially in relation to quarrying.

Yakup also wants the government to make these policies, if any, public.

In a written statement, he said that one of the greatest environmental disasters created by man was the amount of quarrying in the north.

Yakup noted that in total, stone quarries occupy an area of more than 2 million 600 thousand square meters (1.003 sq. miles).

He pointed out that the Environmental Protection Agency had not shown any will to impose sanctions on the activity.
