Greek Cypriot daily ‘Politis’ newspaper, in its article titled “No Signs of Return to Negotiations,” reported on statements attributed to Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos regarding the ongoing diplomatic efforts in Cyprus.
Kombos disclosed ongoing communications with Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary General’s Personal Representative in Cyprus, highlighting frequent dialogues between Greek Cypriot Administration President Nikos Christodoulides and Holguin. However, Kombos clarified that they lack the authority to dictate Holguin’s schedule or the timing of her anticipated visit to Cyprus for further talks.
Anticipating Holguin’s report to UN Secretary-General Guterres in early July, Kombos expressed urgency in maintaining momentum in negotiations before this deadline.
Regarding the stance of the Turkish side, Kombos noted a persistent insistence on sovereign equality and the two-state solution, which complicates efforts to resume talks. He underscored the importance of UN facilitation in navigating these challenges.
Kombos reaffirmed commitment to the established framework, emphasising that negotiations must remain within the purview of the UN Security Council.
The newspaper also reported on the UN’s continued efforts, noting Turkish objections to proposed multilateral meetings and highlighting Greek Cypriot gestures aimed at easing tensions with the Turkish Cypriot community. The report suggested that extending Holguin’s tenure was pivotal for Greek Cypriot efforts, though this was contested by Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar.
The article concluded by pointing out that Turkey’s position would influence the decision on Holguin’s extension and anticipated the forthcoming report to UN Secretary-General Guterres with keen interest.
