The Council of Ministers has made a decision allowing licensed fuel import companies in North Cyprus to import fuel products* from countries other than Turkey and Israel. This decision was made to ensure the security of supply, and the imported fuel must meet the current regulations and quality standards, Yeniduzen reports.

In a separate report, Yeniduzen writes that the Electricity Institution Employees Union (EL-SEN) announced that 36 fuel pump and 5 injector failures, totalling 2 million TL, had occurred at the Teknecik power plant in the last 13 days due to fuel that was brought without tender and not inspected by independent institutions and the results of which were not shared. “There have only been two failures of this type in the past seven months,” the union said in a statement. The union described this as “sabotage“.

*Recent and historical reports of smoke emission from Teknecik power station have pointed to three main causes, a lack of a filter, poor quality diesel and a lack of maintenance because of a shortage of spare parts.

Opposition politicians, environmentalists, the local mayor and local residents have all demanded government action regarding the pollution.

A public meeting will be held tomorrow about the smoke pouring from Teknecik’s chimney stack, Çatalköy – Esentepe Mayor Ceyhun Kırok announced. [Ed.]
