Greek Cypriots concerned that Biden will visit TRNC

Greek Cypriot political parties in Cyprus and noted members of the Greek American community in the US have raised concerns that the US Vice President’s (above) visit to the island will include having contacts in the TRNC, ‘Kibris Postasi’ reports.

Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser to the US Vice-President Joe Biden gave assurances to Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides that Biden fully understood the concerns of the Cypriot government and will take all necessary measures to avoid any actions that undermine the status of the Republic of Cyprus.

Kasoulides met with Sullivan, at the White House on Thursday and was discussing the Vice President’s forthcoming visit to Cyprus, on May 21-23.

Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference after his meeting on Saturday with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkish Cypriot president Derviş Eroğlu said that Biden would be received at the Presidential Palace.

“We will receive Mr. Biden at our guest hall. The TRNC Presidency is the most relevant location anyway. Our flags will be flying in the grounds of the palace. We will of course receive Mr. Biden at the hall where we receive all our guests. We would not do it differently this time.”
