A groundbreaking ceremony for the North Cyprus Irrigation Transmission Tunnel will be held today at Tepebaşı.
The Project of the Century, which conveys water to North Cyprus from Turkey via undersea piping, will also be used to supply the country’s agricultural needs. The foundations of the irrigation tunnel project are being laid for this purpose.
Prior to the ceremony, Turkey’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister Dr. Bekir Pakdemirli said that up to two billion lira had been invested in the project. He said that continued cooperation was essential. The stage of the project where water is supplied to agriculture had to be completed. The potential yield from agriculture in North Cyprus is around 500 billion lira, the minister said. Turkey, said minister Pakdemirli, was ready to share its knowledge and skill with the TRNC.
The Turkish minister will take part in the ceremony at Tepebaşı. at 1.30pm today.
