UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sent a letter to President Mustafa Akinci, saying that “All efforts to reduce tensions are welcomed”.
According to a written statement from the TRNC Presidency, Guterres had carefully noted Akinci’s proposal for the bi-communal management of natural gas resources. The proposal had been rejected by the Greek Cypriot Council of Ministers.
The Secretary-General also mentioned the concerns raised by Akinci about the escalating tension over natural gas resources. He stressed that he believes that offshore energy resources are a strong incentive to reach a lasting solution in Cyprus.
“I appreciate your commitment to a sustainable solution and your readiness to take more confidence-building measures”, Guterres told President Akinci.
