UK Foreign Secretary Phil Hammond has said that he is optimistic about a solution for the Cyprus problem.
Hammond who currently is in Cyprus, after meeting with President Anastasiades said:
“Obviously, the whole international community ardently desires settlement. We are working in every way we can to support the two communities in trying to find a resolution to this long-running problem. I am optimistic.”
The UK Foreign Secretary is expected to meet President Akinci later on Thursday.
“The President and Mr. Akinci are working well together; both of them are committed to finding solutions, but there are of course big challenges that still need to be addressed and we will give every support we can as they move to find a solution,” he said.
Hammond will also hold talks with Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and UN Secretary-General Special Envoy Espen Barth Eide. He is also scheduled to meet with the Committee on Missing Persons.
