The Ministry of Health’s Basic Health Services Department has warned citizens about the risk of diseases that could be caused by flooding.
The statement issued by the ministry said that rescue and major clean-up work should be carried out by people with special skills and expertise. Driver are advised not to drive through flooded roads and only bottle water should be consumed if you are unsure of the source of the water. When washing or preparing food or making ice, only use water from a trusted source. Otherwise use bottled or boiled water.
Floods can disrupt water and sewage systems and cause biological and chemical contamination, the statement said. This brings the risk of infectious diseases.
Care should be taken when cleaning up outside the house if it has been flooded. Wear boots and glove and use bleach to disinfect. Do not allow children to play in puddles which may also be contaminated.
Also avoid contact with any broken wiring or lines and report them to the appropriate authorities.
Have your cesspits and waste water systems checked by the authorities.
