Heavy snow affects flights from Istanbul

Heavy snowfall has severely affected travel in Istanbul as flights and ferries were cancelled and schools were closed by a snow storm that is expected to continue until late Tuesday.

Turkish Airlines announced today that 399 domestic and international flights scheduled from Istanbul Atatürk Airport and Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport had been cancelled because of adverse weather conditions.

Turkey’s low-cost Pegasus Airlines cancelled more than 100 flights over 18th and 19th January, while Onur Air cancelled ten flights scheduled for today.

The snow also affected Istanbul’s maritime traffic as Istanbul’s Fast Ferry and Sea Bus Company (IDO) announced that its ferries between Istanbul and Bursa had been cancelled for the day.

Snowfall is expected to continue until tomorrow evening, the Met Office has said.
