On December 19, 2016, a new regulation was introduced, prohibiting trucks over 5 tons from travelling on the section of the Kyrenia-Nicosia road between the Kyrenia Overpass and the St. Hilarion Castle Junction, Kibris Postasi reported. Despite clear signage at the St. Hilarion Castle Junction indicating the ban, large vehicles continue to use this restricted area. Kibris Postasi has captured images showing that these heavy vehicles are ignoring the restrictions, and traffic rules are not being enforced.

The Highways Department’s regulations, which fall under the Public Roads Protection Law, ban trucks over 5 tons from being on the road starting one hour before public work hours. Yet, companies like Arpalıklı are flouting these restrictions by keeping their heavy vehicles on the roads during these prohibited times.

The primary reason for this ongoing issue seems to be insufficient police enforcement. Both the current and former Directors of the Highways Department, Kazım Kafaoğlu and Hasan Nihat Erduran, have pointed out the lack of effective policing as a major problem.

Kazım Kafaoğlu: Police Inspections Are Lacking

Kazım Kafaoğlu has expressed concerns over the continued use of the Nicosia-Kyrenia road by heavy vehicles, despite existing bans. He highlighted a rise in complaints about the lack of police checks, stressing that the police need to increase their inspections. According to Kafaoğlu, reports against companies violating the restrictions are not effective without proper enforcement.

Hasan Nihat Erduran: Enforcement of Regulations Is Essential

Former Director Hasan Nihat Erduran underlined the need for police to enforce the current regulations. He pointed out that the latest directive remains in effect and that the police are responsible for ensuring compliance and issuing fines. Erduran also pointed out that proper inspections of vehicle documents and weights are necessary, alongside continuous monitoring of infrastructure by the authorities.
