The registration process for Hellim/Halloumi cheese as a PDO and lawsuits filed against mainland Turkish companies have increased exports of the cheese from Cyprus.
According to the head of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber Industry, Ali Cirali, there were 70 companies in Turkey which were producing the cheese. That number has now been considerably reduced. Some companies had given up production of Hellim on the mainland and were now selling the product from Cyprus.
He said that the Chamber of Industry is demanding compensation from the Turkish companies which produced Hellim/Halloumi in Turkey, and that the court will determine the amount of the compensation.
Exports of hellim/halloumi product have increased mainly to satisfy the rising demand by several Arab countries.
