Higher turnout in TRNC for voting on Turkey’s constitutional referendum

A total of 43,480 Turkish nationals residing in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus voted on the constitutional referendum in Turkey.

42 sealed bags containing the votes were successfully delivered to the High Electoral Council in Ankara, Turkey.

Turkish nationals registered in the TRNC were able to cast their votes at the voting centre set up at the 20 Temmuz Science High School in Nicosia between the 5th and 9th of April.

Speaking to the Anatolian News Agency, the Turkish Ambassador to Nicosia Derya Kanbay, said that turnout was higher in comparison to previous years.

He said that of the 100 thousand registered voters in the TRNC, 43,480 had voted on the referendum for constitutional change.

We have seen a 10% increase in votes in comparison to the 2015 elections,” he said.

Pointing out that there had been no incidents during the five days of voting, Kanbay thanked officials in charge of security.

He said that allowing citizens to vote abroad was important in terms of allowing the people to make their democratic choices.

Voting on the referendum on the proposed constitutional change for a transition to a presidential system of governance will take place in Turkey on Sunday, 16th April.
