International Migration Office opens in Nicosia

An International Organisation for Migration (IOM) office was opened in Nicosia on Monday.

The IOM promotes best practices and assists states in implementing policies and migration laws, in relation to migrants in need, refugees, voluntary returns and trafficking of persons, the South’s Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos said at the opening ceremony.

He said that currently Cyprus is facing challenges because of the refugee crisis and will benefit from the experience and cooperation with the IOM. He noted that Cyprus is already cooperating with the IOM on migration, with particular emphasis on voluntary returns, human trafficking and EU migration.

The minister also added that aim of the Organisation is to promote sustainable solutions with regard to migration while respecting the fundamental human rights of migrants.
