Specialist Physiotherapist Havva Gözgen, a board member of the Cyprus Turkish Physical Activity Association, has called on the public to “Invest in your health through movement” in recognition of World Diabetes Day which was on 14 November, Yeniduzen reported.
Highlighting the importance of raising awareness about diabetes prevention and management, Gözgen noted that this day is marked annually to draw attention to the issue. She emphasised that diabetes is a serious health condition affecting millions worldwide, including in Turkey, and it significantly impacts quality of life. “Managing diabetes effectively requires adopting a healthy lifestyle”, she explained. “Regular exercise and an active lifestyle play a crucial role in both preventing and treating diabetes”.
The Role of Physical Activity in Diabetes Management
Gözgen stressed that exercise not only supports physical health but also has psychological benefits. She pointed out that physical activity helps insulin work more effectively in the body, contributing to better blood sugar control.
Recognising the potential circulation and nervous system problems that diabetes can cause, Gözgen underscored the importance of creating a safe and effective exercise plan. She added, “For individuals with diabetes, activities such as walking, swimming, cycling, and yoga are generally recommended. These exercises protect joint health, improve muscle strength, and positively impact overall health”.
Increase Movement in Daily Life
Gözgen suggested that making small changes in daily routines can greatly improve diabetes management. “Choosing the stairs instead of the lift or walking short distances instead of driving can significantly increase your activity levels”, she said.
She also emphasised that while living with diabetes can be challenging, professional support can make the process much easier. Gözgen concluded:
“As physiotherapists, we are here to design tailored exercise programmes, address musculoskeletal issues, and guide you towards suitable physical activities. Remember, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle are key to managing diabetes effectively.
