Jack Straw Cyprob Comments Stir Greek Outrage

North Cyprus News - Jack Straw
[Former British Foreign Secretary – Jack Straw]
Former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has made a significant statement regarding the long-standing Cyprus issue, which has remained unresolved for over fifty years. Straw expressed that his greatest regret from his tenure was the admission of Southern Cyprus into the European Union (EU) on May 1, 2004, while the Cyprus conflict was still unresolved, Kibris Postasi reports.

His comments drew the ire of the Greek press.

Straw criticised the Greek Cypriot leadership, stating that southern Cyprus has become a refuge for wealthy Russians by selling EU passports, and for obstructing reconciliation efforts with Northern Cyprus. He suggested that the Greek Cypriots are wary of any agreement with the north because it might diminish their current influence.

According to Straw, the only way to overcome this impasse is for the EU and key international partners, including the UK, to make it clear that if the south does not negotiate in good faith, the option of dividing the island will be considered. Straw, who has extensively researched the Cyprus issue, believes that this threat of division could prompt the south to make concessions.

Straw challenged the stance of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who stated three years ago that the EU would “never” accept a two-state solution for Cyprus. Straw argued that there are numerous examples in Europe and beyond where division has resolved conflicts effectively. He suggested that the potential for a divided Cyprus might encourage the south to compromise, otherwise, it could face a fully independent and internationally recognised northern state.

He also criticised von der Leyen’s position, deeming it absurd given the current situation. Straw questioned why the people of northern Cyprus should continue to suffer international isolation while their representatives attempt to negotiate with a stubborn south.

Straw called for the UK to reassess its approach to the Cyprus issue. His comments have sparked considerable controversy in Greece, where the media have accused him of being provocative and called for a response against his views. The Greek press, under the headline “Shame on You”, labelled Straw as one of the worst critics of Greek interests.
