Joint community police raids on illegal gambling dens in Pile (Pyla)

Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot police jointly organised raids on eight illegal casinos in the mixed village of Pile (Pyla) early Tuesday morning.

During the operation, which was mounted in cooperation by both community’s police forces, under UN auspices, 47 people were arrested,

The eight illegal casinos were operating under the pretext of being internet cafes and bars in the village.

Co-Chair of the Bi-communal Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters Celal Önen explained that the joint police operation, was carried out with the understanding that it was part of the effort to reduce crime, without any change to Pile’s current status. The action was a result of long-term studies conducted by the committee under the coordination of the UN Police Directorate.

Six Turkish Cypriot citizens have been taken into custody by the TRNC Police and will appear in court. Meanwhile 37 Greek Cypriots, one Romanian and three Vietnamese were taken into custody by the Greek Cypriot authorities.
