Journalists’ union warns of more job losses

Unfair competition in the Turkish Cypriot printed media has threatened the survival of the sector, the Turkish Cypriot Journalists’ Union (KTBG) has said.

In a written statement, the Union pointed out that newspapers are facing extinction because of the financial burden of the printed media and keeping pace with technology.

Referring to the demise of the printed edition of Kibris Postasi newspaper at the end of February and the continuation of its online publication, the Union said that last year, it had warned of the dangers of eliminating the “corporate structure” of the newspapers.

The Union said that if necessary measures are not taken, many more workers will lose their jobs, as happened at Kibris Postasi.
