Citizens and organisations within the TRNC are strongly criticising AKSA the private power generating company of negligence.
Unions and NGO’s are calling for a formal inquiry into AKSA and for heavy compensation from the company.
Erol Emin, head of GUCSEN the power workers’ union, said that he was not surprised by the incident. There had been a similar though smaller incident in March. He demanded that AKSA be made to pay for the disaster.
Head of the Green Famagusta Movement, Umut Altuns says that the clean-up will not be as easy as AKSA management declares. He feels that the effects of the oil spill will impact the environment for years to come.
