Karpas Protestors Go to Court

The Biologists Association went to the high court today, seeking an injunction to stop the building of the Karpas road.

The head of the association, Hasan Sarpten has produced a written press statement. In it he writes that the Karpas region is one of the richest natural areas in the eastern Mediterranean. Of the environmentally protected species, 162 of the 238 flora and fauna types are in the Karpas.  The same applies for 147 out of 215 protected species of bird.

Mr Sarpten says that the government treats the Karpas like its own farm instead of as a legally protected area. He went on that it been building the road in a reckless manner and destroying the local environment in the process.
