The Cyprus Turkish Electrical Contractors Association (KTEMB) has stressed the need for stronger enforcement of laws and enhanced inspections to prevent fatal electrical accidents. They expressed concern over the recent rise in deadly electrical incidents and highlighted necessary measures. Notably, illegal electrical work, which was 8-12% before the pandemic, has surged to 30-35%, Yeniduzen reports.
The pandemic-induced construction boom has brought in unskilled workers, leading to more illegal electrical work and increased accidents. KTEMB noted that despite threats and attacks, they have continued their efforts to maintain industry discipline, preventing a potential tripling of current fatal accidents.
The core issue is insufficient inspections and law enforcement. Despite regulations, unauthorised individuals are still performing electrical work, directly contributing to accidents. KTEMB insists that only certified professionals should handle electrical tasks and calls for stricter inspections and banning untrained workers from such jobs.
KTEMB also highlighted the importance of proper protective equipment and safe working practices, like not working in wet conditions. They stressed that preventing electrical accidents is a collective responsibility, achievable through stringent law enforcement and inspections, ensuring a safer community.
